道教經典是道教教義的文字記錄，也是道教歷史的記錄，它本身有一個起源、形成和發展的歷程。在這一歷程中，它演變出獨特的分類法，諸多道書經目，形成《道藏》。在這一歷程中，它的社會影響在擴大，甚至有的道經傳到海外，促進了中外文化的交流。道經除了它的版本價值，還有中國社會史、哲學史等史料學的價值，更可貴的，道經中保存了大量的中國古代科學技術的資料，為研究中國科學技術史所必不可少。另外，從中還能發現許多中國古代文學藝術的珍貴材料。道經是中國傳統文化的「博物館」之一，包羅萬象，不僅為我們領略道教，也為我們領略中國文化提供了一塊寶地。

三洞真經是指[[洞真部]]、[[洞玄部]]和[[洞神部]]的道經。南朝道士[[陸修靜]]在《[[三洞經書目錄]]》中首創把道經分為洞真部、洞玄部和洞神部。按歷代道書的解釋，「洞」的意思是「通」，其中洞真部以《上清經》為首，其特點是「靈秘不雜」，故號稱「洞真」；洞玄部以《靈寶經》為首，其特點是「生天立地，功用不滯」，故號稱「洞玄」；洞神部經典以《三皇文》為首，其特點是「召制鬼神，其功不測」，故號稱「洞神」。

四輔真經是指太清部、太平部、太玄部和正一部的道經。由於「三洞」分類未能囊括所有道書，所以後人在這基礎上引申出「四輔」分類作為補充。太清部補充洞神部，主要講述丹道；太平部補充洞玄部，以《太平經》為主；太玄經補充洞真部，以《道德真經》為主；正一部補充各部，以經籙為主。
《中華道藏》第二部類《四輔真經》把相關經典劃分為太平部諸經、太玄部經訣、正一部經籙、道德眞經、四子眞經、黃帝陰符經、道教易學、太清金丹經、太清攝養經等子類。
